Suit of Hearts

Project Overview

As a group, our four-part theme focused on “different eras in the 20th century.” The 20th century had extremely different styles and movements and each member of the group chose a particular decade (20s, 50s, 60s, 80s) for her individual suit. I chose the 1960s because I believe it had powerful and significant events that will always be remembered in history. The design of the cards consequently focuses on 1960s major events to serve as a historical and
educational tool for players.I started this project by researching as much a I could about  the 1960s.  I collected a number of high resolution images for the events and edited them using Photoshop. For the Jack, Queen, and King cards I used John Lennon, Audrey Hepburn, and Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan respectively. For the rest of the deck, I used the photography of the events and explained them briefly underneath the image. I decided to keep the cards white and clean because I wanted to keep the focus on the functionality of the playing cards.

Card Suit: 1960’s Hearts

For this project, we were broken into groups of four and asked to choose a theme with four different components for a deck of cards. Each student in the group had to produce a suit of cards based on one of the four components. This project helped us understand that design can be applied to reusable packaging such as simple games, while showcasing our individual styles. We worked as a collaborative team to design the full deck based on a theme of “eras in the 20th century” and my era was the 1960’s using the suit of hearts.
